Homelessness in King County is in a state of crisis.  Based on All Home King County's Count Us In 2016 Report, on one night in January 2016, 824 homeless and unstably housed youth and young adults were counted.

32% Identified as AFRICAN AMERICAN/BLACK

13% identified as HISPANIC

27% identified as LGBTQ

Legal advocacy can help address barriers blocking a youth or young adult's path to safe and stable housing.  Legal advocacy has a critical role to play in reducing and preventing youth homelessness.

 

responding to an unmet need: legal services partnership for youth

LCYC and Street Youth Legal Advocates for Washington (SYLAW) collaborated to expand free civil legal services for homeless youth through our joint pilot project, “Legal Services Partnership for Youth.”  LCYC is now providing free, civil legal services to youth, ages 12 -24 years, who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness.   Some examples of legal issues we may be able to assist with include:

Child Protective Services

Consumer Debt

Divorce

Education

Emancipation

Guardianships

Identity Theft

Immigration   

Landlord/Tenant

Orders for Protection

Parenting Plans

Public Benefits

Record Sealing

Warrants

LCYC is also partnering with YouthCareNexus Youth and Families, Tukwila School District and others to provide timely, direct, onsite services to youth in need.

Youth and young adults between the ages of 12 and 24 years who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness are welcome to stop by during our intake hours, or submit a self-referral.  Adults who are engaged with youth in need of and qualifying for services may also refer the youth.  Click HERE for the referral form and corresponding instructions.
